About the Project

The fifth café in the Portland chain continues the brand’s established architectural language, interpreted here through a more pronounced industrial aesthetic.

The interior is defined by a calm grey tone — restrained and architectural — forming a cohesive backdrop for light, texture, and movement. The ceiling, finished in decorative plaster, recalls the surface left after the removal of timber formwork, with subtle irregularities that introduce a sense of raw materiality. Exposed ductwork and building services reinforce the industrial character and add spatial depth.

Layout

The space is organised to allow the café to shift in atmosphere throughout the day. During daytime, the interior remains open and light; in the evening, the lighting scheme creates more intimate zones.

Lighting subtly defines different areas, shaping a calm environment suited to both short visits and extended stays. The layout follows a clear spatial logic, allowing visitors to intuitively read the space while maintaining clarity and restraint.

Concept

Materiality plays a central role in defining the character of the interior. Natural veneer panels are paired with decorative aluminium tiles from the 1980s, introducing texture, reflection, and a measured contrast to the calm architectural base.

The result reflects Portland as an urban, understated, and dynamic space — where industrial aesthetics are balanced with the warmth of everyday city life.
